About FINS

Fish Inventory System

FINS contains standardized hatchery juvenile fish production, release, and adult data that inform overall hatchery operations, fisheries management and mitigation decisions for salmon, steelhead and other fish species.

FINS Informs Mitigation for the Four Lower Snake River Dams

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Lower Snake River Compensation Plan Hatchery Program mitigates for the annual loss of returning adult salmon and steelhead resulting from the construction of the four lower Snake River dams. Data submitted to FINS is used to assess progress towards mitigation goals.

FINS Informs Mitigation for the Hells Canyon Complex

Idaho Power constructed the Oxbow, Rapid River, Niagara Springs, and Pahsimeroi hatcheries in the 1960s, and today it funds the Idaho Department of Fish and Game to operate these facilities.

Data from these hatcheries is submitted to FINS to inform decisions related to hatchery operations and mitigation assessments.

FINS is a collaborative hatchery database that tracks production from adult collection to egg and juvenile releases. This information informs fisheries management, hatchery operations, and contributes to reports. Funding is provided by Idaho Power, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Idaho Department of Fish and Game, and Nez Perce Tribe.

Hatchery programs with data in FINS contribute mainly to fish mitigation efforts for impacts caused by the construction and operation of the four lower Snake River dams and the Hells Canyon Dam Complex.

Representatives from these organizations participate in data sharing using FINS .
